• Washington Park is beautiful on a Sunday morning, with wooded areas, a gorgeous pond, and some grassland. Parts of the park are closed off for construction, so you can’t cross the bridge over the pond, but it is well worth a visit nonetheless.

    Sniffs – ★★★★★

With a lot of variety along the paths, we were able to find all sorts of interesting scents.

    Pets by Strangers – ★☆☆☆☆

It was quiet, with only a few other passersby even though we didn’t get there until about 9:30.

    Wildlife – ★★★★☆

We saw birds (including a heron) squirrels, and rabbits during the walk, which certainly kept Zorya interested!

    Overall – ★★★★★

Washington is a beautiful park on the north side, and well worth a visit. We can’t wait for the maintenance to be done so we can go back!

  • Granville is, in Zorya’s opinion, the best dog park in Milwaukee. Any given day she’s happy to go play in the river, wander the paths, and get as muddy as possible.

    Sniffs ★★★★★

There’s river, there’s trees, there’s grassland, there’s other dogs’ poop. What else could you want?

    Wildlife ★☆☆☆☆

Because there are so many dogs in this park all the time most of the smart wildlife doesn’t come around. You can see the occasional squirrel.

    Pets from strangers ★★★★☆

It depends on when you go, but usually there are a few other dogs and dog friendly people there. The trick is to catch them by the river so the dogs can chase each other around for a while!

    Overall ★★★★★

It is a beautiful park, and a great place to let your dog off leash. It is only fenced on 3 sides, so be cautious if your dog is a runner. For Zorya it is perfect, and she gets very excited whenever she realizes where we’re getting off the highway!

  • Lion’s Den Gorge has a beautiful nature trail overlooking Lake Michigan.

    Sniffs ★★★★☆

The trails offer an exciting variety of rock, grasses, and trees, all of which make an exciting walk for Zorya.

    Wildlife ★★☆☆☆

Some squirrels and other small animals, but nothing too exciting

    Pets from Strangers ★☆☆☆☆

Everyone is focused on their own walks through this trail, so not a lot of attention from other people.

    Overall ★★★★☆

It is a beautiful park with some gorgeous views. A great place to visit with fairly easy dirt trails, but the paths themselves are pretty short.

  • A walk along the beach

A hot day meant we decided to go to Lake Michigan and enjoy a beach morning!

    Sniffs – ★★★★★

Lake Michigan is always a great place to sniff – the odd dead fish was a particular treat.

    Wildlife – ★☆☆☆☆

Apart from the aforementioned dead fish, all we saw were seagulls, which were content to ignore us as long as we ignored them.

    Pets from Strangers – ★★★★★

It was a busy day, and the south portion of the beach is officially a dog beach, so a lot of people and other dogs were willing to play.

    Overall – ★★★★★

While technically an on-leash dog beach, most people treat it as off leash. It’s usually a good idea to get there early, because it gets pretty busy. We arrived at around 9:30 and were the first people on the beach, and when we left at noon it was very busy.

Harrington is only about a 45 minute drive from Milwaukee, and it is by my estimate the best dog beach in the Milwaukee area.
